When I think of spring I am reminded of a dear series of books that a favourite cousin introduced us to when my oldest daughter had her first birthday – Frog and Toad (Arnold Lobel) are friends with a lot in common and some appreciable differences; for instance, when Frog excitedly tries to rouse Toad in April, Toad groggily asks him to please come back at half-past May! To my delight, my youngest daughter recently introduced me to Ohi’s new Canadian book, Fox and Squirrel, for whom one might assume the differences would be too great to allow for a similar kind of friendship. However, Fox deftly puts aside Squirrel’s concerns about such things as size and daytime versus nocturnal habits – They both like sunset! Ohi’s watercolour illustrations are as simple and sweet as the text with a good deal of humour tucked in. No surprise that her books, including this gem, have been nominated for such prestigious awards as the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award and the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbons Illustrations Award. Fox and Squirrel is also available in French as Rikki et Rouquin, its simple text lending itself to readers new to the language.
